Zero Feet Away From Basil Soper

“We’re more than bathroom bills. We’re more than our family who doesn’t want to talk to us. We’re more than what we see in movies.”

Writer and activist Basil Soper wants to shift the trans narrative. Dissatisfied with the typical media representation of trans people as existing only in traumatizing spaces, Soper created Transilient, a traveling photo and interview project that aims to tackle transphobia by portraying trans experiences in a positive light.

Since 2016 the Transilient team has driven more than 10,000 miles, conducting interviews with trans and gender nonconforming people across the country about their day-to-day lives. The resulting portraits reveal a complex reality that transcends the familiar narratives of oppression and physical experience that typically define trans representation.

Check out our interview for more on Soper’s stories from the road and plans for Transilient in a post-Trump America.
